ENGAGE #12

GOD SETS US FREE

The Bible says:
If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed!
John 8:36

For his unfailing love towards those who fear him is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth.  He has removed our rebellious acts as far away as the east is from the west.
Psalm 102:11-12

I [Jesus] have come that you may have life, and have it to the full!
John 10:10

WHAT THIS MEANS:
A relationship with Jesus means letting him take all the crap in our lives and cast it away forever.  The bible says that we are "slaves" to sin.  It takes over our lives and pulls us down.  Only Jesus can really set us free.  Sometimes we see Christianity as something that burdens us, something that imprisons us, but that's not what Jesus wants at all.  He doesn't want to burden us, he wants to set us free from all the stuff that pulls us down and tears us down!  Then we can really be free to LIVE life to it's fullest and experience it as we were meant to be.  Living as a follower of Jesus is really the BEST way to live life!

ACTION:
1. Watch this cool video
2. Ask yourself: what do you need to give up to Jesus; what do you need to be set free from?
3. Give it to him.  Let him take it and cast it away.
4. Begin again.  You are free!  Live like it!

PRAY:
Ask Jesus to set you free from all that burdens you.  Give it up to him.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
(these are intended to help get discussion started - please do not feel confined to these questions: comment as you like!)
Is it hard to view Christianity as freedom rather than something that keeps us from being free?  Why or why not?

  1. I've never really thought of it as being a burden, but then again, I've never thought of it as freedom either. It's an interesting concept and I like it. It makes sense and it was just what I needed to hear right now. ^-^

I'm glad Engage is back up. :D

  3. i think at first i viewed it as a burden. i wasn't interested in all the rules and nit-picky things that i needed to do in order for other people to define my life as "good" i just never caught on. but now i think i finally have. i view it more as a challenge. what can i do today that can help me become a better person in Christ? but yet i don't exactly see it as freedom. it's more like a vast set of boundaries that i'm curious about and want to take the time to learn.
